The airline was founded in 1984 as Danren Enterprises by Irish businessman Tony Ryan and Liam Lonergan of Club Travel, operating one route between Waterford, Ireland and London Gatwick. The company was renamed Ryanair the following year with the goal of challenging the dominance of Aer Lingus and British Airways on the Ireland-London route.
In 1998 Ryanair employed Michael O’Leary, who rolled out a “no frills” business plan highlighted by a fast turn-around, lack of business class and one model of aircraft policy.
This strategy has put Ryanair in top spot as Europe’s largest carrier, operating in 37 countries and with 81 million passengers in 2017.
